Today in History

Today is December 31st 2011 and on this day in history in 1879, Thomas Edison demonstrates incandescent light to the public, by lighting up a street in Menlo Park, New Jersey.

An incandescent light bulb produces light by heating a metal filament wire to a high temperature until it glows.

Even though other inventors also came up with other versions of incandescent lamps, Thomas Edison's version stood out because of its effective incandescent material , its higher vacuum , and its high resistance.

During his demonstration in Menlo Park, Edison said, "We will make electricity so cheap, only the rich will burn candles". And now in 2011 we can say his statement was correct.
